The feeling of shame dislike is essential to man .

無羞惡之心 , 非人也 .

All men have a mind which cannot bear to see the suffering of  others .

人皆有惻隱之心 .

He who advances with precipitation will recede with speed .

其進銳者 , 其退速 .

A man must first despise himself and then others will despise him .

人必自侮而後悔之 .

He who loves others is constantly loved by them ;

he who respects others is constantly respected by them .

愛人者 , 人恆愛之 ; 敬人者 , 人恆敬之 .

When one by force subdues men they do not submit to him in heart .

When one subdues men by virtue ,

 in their hearts'  core they are pleased and sincerely submit .

以力服人者 , 非心服也 ; 以德服人者 , 中心悅而誠服也 .
